    Seeking help for your child's sleep

    Difficulty sleeping is common. Most of the time, it's nothing to worry about. It is not dangerous to have an occasional night when you do not get enough sleep. But if you find yourself sleeping too little night after night, getting tired, feeling unwell and functioning less well in everyday life, you may need help to get better sleep.

    Where can I go for help if my child's sleep becomes a problem?

    Many people are tired in the early days of parenthood and struggle to adjust to the sleep habits of a new family, this is common and part of the big adjustment to becoming a parent. It is common for young children to have difficulty falling asleep and wake up frequently during the night, yet most young children get enough sleep. As a parent, getting enough sleep during the toddler years can be more challenging.

    If there are two parents in the family, think about the cooperation between them and how you can divide the nights. If there are people in the network, such as friends or relatives, it is a good idea to ask them for help with practical steps that can make everyday life easier and that the child can sleep away with someone in the network with whom they are safe.

    Some children have greater problems with sleep at times, for example, they find it harder to fall asleep, wake up more often or have recurring nightmares. If you notice that your child's sleep is getting worse, or if you as a parent are unsure and want advice and support about your child's sleep, it is a good idea to contact the BVC. Tell them about the situation. If you need more support, BVC can help you contact a psychologist or pediatrician.

    Long-term disrupted sleep in parents of young children can lead to sleep disorders. Sleep disturbance negatively affects one's cognitive ability and patience and it can be difficult to find solutions to cope with the nights. Get help from each other if you are two parents, ask for advice from BVC and support from the network. Lower the demands on yourself as a parent. If you have a sleep disorder, you can also contact a general practitioner at the health center for help.
