The maternity letter - do you have to write it?

In this article, we will go through everything related to the birth certificate. Whatever your choice and whatever your attitude towards a birth certificate, we hope to give you some good advice and things to think about.

Things to consider when writing your birth certificate

You may find it helpful to write down things that are important to you before giving birth. You can do this in the form of a prenuptial agreement which you give to the midwives when you come into labor.

How much you want to write down and how you want to prepare is entirely up to you. You know your needs best, so it can be good preparation for yourself to write down what you want and how you want to be taken care of. Perhaps you like to be in control of situations and be as informed as possible, or do you like to take things as they come? Either way, it can be good for everyone involved to know what you expect.

Even if you can't influence everything in the birth itself can you influence your approach to it.

If you are a person who takes things a little bit as they come, a birth certificate may seem superfluous, but it is good to think about what your expectations are and reflect on your own approach.

Things that could be included in a birth letter are, for example, whether you want a lot of information or want to focus on the birth itself. How you want to be treated when you are in pain and what kind of support you need in general. If there is any particular position you prefer to give birth in, or if you want any particular pain relief. If you have any particular fears, perhaps of losing control or breaking in the abdomen?

To make things a little easier for you if you want to write a birth letter, here are some points to start from:

    - How do I react to pain? Is there any particular pain relief I wish?
    - How would my dream childbirth look like?
    - What do I want in terms of communication?
    - What do I want in terms of support?
    - Is there any particular birthing position I want to give birth in?
    - How do you think/feel? partner for childbirth?
    - Is there anything in particular that health professionals need to know about my background (mental or physical) to best support and relate?
    - How do I think about breastfeeding?
    - If you have given birth before: What would you change or add to this birth?

It's good to read up on the upcoming birth, but don't doubt that your body can handle it and that the staff will be there for you. Do your homework and try to keep an open mind, so you won't be disappointed if things don't go exactly as you planned. Not everything in life can be influenced to 100% and childbirth definitely qualifies - and there can be some good in it too! Try to have faith in yourself and the people around you.
