    Hjärnans utveckling fortsätter och omkring nervcellerna bildas nu ett isolerande fetthölje som möjliggör för hjärnans impulser att färdas snabbare. Den här utvecklingen fortsätter och accelererar omkring tiden då barnet skulle ha fötts. Aktiviteten för hjärnans utveckling är oregelbunden men sker nu i cykler under den tiden som barnet sover i drömstadiet. Drömsömnen är viktig för att barnet ska utveckla sina sinnen medan den djupa sömnen är av betydelse för inlärningsförmågan. När barnet sover kan man ofta se snabba ögonrörelser under de stängda ögonlocken. Barnet noterar främst lågfrekventa ljud och kan skilja på om det är en manlig eller kvinnlig röst som talar. Ögonen är fortfarande omogna och kan inte till fullo reglera det inkommande ljuset till näthinnan. Smakmässigt kan barnet skilja mellan söt och sur smak. Motoriskt är barnets rörelsemönster fortfarande ryckiga och reflexmässiga. För att försöka trösta sig själv försöker barnet att föra handen nära munnen, suga på en napp eller försöka gripa tag om något.

    Lungorna är fortfarande omogna och behöver någon form av andningsstöd för att kunna andas tillräckligt djupt och effektivt. Under de här veckorna räcker det ofta att få andningsstöd i form av en CPAP där barnet andas mot ett luftmotstånd som hjälper till att öppna upp lungblåsorna för att effektivisera andningsvolymen. Barnet kan fortfarande ha svårt att reglera sin puls och andning.
