    Kikhosta är otroligt smittsamt och något man bör undvika att små barn får till varje pris– tillståndet kan nämligen bli allvarligt, ibland till och med livshotande. Men eftersom vuxna sällan vet att de bär på kikhosta kan det vara lättare sagt än gjort att undvika. Genom att ta vaccin mot kikhosta under graviditeten kan du ge bebisen i magen det skydd den behöver.

    Sedan 2022 rekommenderar Folkhälsomyndigheten* att alla gravida vaccinerar sig mot kikhosta. Därför vill vi tillsammans med Sanofi utbilda blivande föräldrar i vad kikhosta är, hur det smittar, vilka allvarliga symptom små barn kan få och hur du som gravid går tillväga för att vaccinera dig.

    Vad är kikhosta? 

    Kikhosta är en väldigt smittsam luftvägsinfektion. Små spädbarn är särskilt sårbara för att drabbas och kan få en allvarlig och långvarig hosta. Under hostattackerna kan barnet hosta så att det blir röd-blå i ansiktet och tappar andan! När barnet sedan lyckas dra in luft hörs ofta ett väsande eller pipande ljud som kallas för kikning, därav namnet kikhosta.

    I typiska fall börjar kikhosta med förkylning och/eller lätt feber som sedan övergår till en mer intensiv hosta som kommer attackvis. Efter en tid kan de typiska kikningarna uppenbara sig, som ibland kan avslutas med kräkningar. Barnet brukar bli väldigt utmattad då hostattackerna kan komma allt från tre till femtio gånger per dygn, ofta när barnet ligger ner.

    Hur smittar kikhosta?

    Kikhosta smittar genom luften, ofta inomhus, när den som fått infektionen hostar eller nyser. Man behöver vara i nära kontakt i mer än en timme för att bli smittad. Infektionen smittar som mest under de första 1-2 veckorna efter insjuknande och det tar vanligtvis upp till två veckor från att du blivit smittad till att du blir sjuk. 

    Vuxna insjuknar ofta utan att veta om det då symptomen brukar vara lindriga, ofta med rethosta under en längre period. Smittan förs sedan över till barnet som hanterar infektionen helt annorlunda, ofta med betydligt värre hostattacker som kan göra att de tappar andan en liten stund. 

    Vaccin mot kikhosta ger bebisen skydd

    Barn vaccineras mot kikhosta på BVC först ett par månader efter födseln, men då kan det redan vara för sent. För att skydda barnet under dessa första månader kan du vaccinera dig under graviditeten, vilket rekommenderas av folkhälsomyndigheten sedan 2022. Vid vaccination under graviditeten bildas antikroppar mot kikhosta som förs över till barnet och ger skydd under de första levnadsmånaderna.

    Så gör du för att vaccinera dig

    I dagsläget informeras du som gravid om vaccinet när du går på dina besök hos barnmorskemottagningen. Din barnmorska kommer rekommendera dig vaccination för att sedan hänvisa dig till din vårdcentral eller till en vaccinationscentral. Du behöver alltså själv ta tag i vaccinationen, vilket du kan göra efter graviditetsvecka 16.
