    Tre varianter av bröstmjölk och innehåll

    Under den senare delen av graviditeten bildas råmjölk, även känt som kolostrum, och detta är den första sammansättningen bröstmjölk som produceras dagarna efter förlossningen. Denna bröstmjölk har ett annorlunda innehåll än den mogna mjölken som produceras senare. Den är transparent och gulaktigt på grund av det höga innehållet av betakaroten (samma näringsämne som ger moroten dess färg). Råmjölken innehåller mer protein, vitamin A och K samt mindre socker och fett än den mogna mjölken.

    Råmjölken är mer lättsmält för den nyfödda bebisens magen och kan lättare tas upp i kroppen. Den innehåller mycket immunoglobuliner och mjölkbakterier som hjälper till med immunförsvaret och kan därför skydda barnet mot vissa infektioner. Råmjölken stimulerar passagen av mekoniumet i tarmen (bebisens första bajs som är svart och segt i konsistensen).

    Under tiden som råmjölken utvecklas till mogen mjölk kallas den för övergångsmjölk. Detta sker vanligen några dagar till ett par veckor efter förlossningen. Exakt hur lång tid detta tar är individuellt från kvinna till kvinna.

    Ungefär tre till fyra veckor efter förlossningen så har den mogna mjölken fördigutvecklats. Bröstmjölken har då ett innehåll av högre halter fett och laktos jämfört med råmjölken. Även om den mogna mjölken inte innehåller lika mycket immunoglobuliner så får barnet ett betydande skydd för infektioner som håller i sig så länge barnet ammas. Bröstmjölkens fettsammansättning påverkas av vad mamman har för kosthållning.
