Tips for those trying to get pregnant

There are many routes to pregnancy. We all have different conditions, and for some it may be faster than for others to get that long-awaited plus on the stick. Although there is currently no known "miracle cure" that automatically leads to pregnancy, according to 1177, a healthy lifestyle can affect both the chances of getting pregnant and having a healthy pregnancy. Below you will find some tips that may be useful to keep in mind if you are trying to get pregnant. These tips apply to both women and men.

    Timing your ovulation

Ovulation usually occurs 14 days before your next period, but it is wise to keep track of your own cycle to be aware of when your most fertile days occur. You can do this through, for example, a ovulation calendar or an ovulation test.

Eat a healthy and varied diet

A healthy diet is beneficial for fertility in both men and women. Prioritize nutrient-rich foods such as fish, eggs, green leafy vegetables and legumes to give your fertility a boost.

    Folic acid/Folate

Folic acid, found in green leafy vegetables and whole grain products, is essential for early fetal development and for preventing neural tube defects. If you are trying to conceive, the Swedish National Food Agency recommends taking tablets containing 400 micrograms of folic acid daily until week 12 of pregnancy.

    Limiting caffeine intake

Cutting down on coffee and tea, among other things, can be a good idea if you are trying to get pregnant. In fact, moderate coffee consumption is preferable to optimize fertility, as a high intake of caffeine can reduce fertility, according to 1177.

    Regular exercise

Regular exercise is beneficial for both the physical and mental health of both men and women. It also increases the chances of a healthy pregnancy and improves sperm quality. Getting your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes a day and combining strength and cardio training is a good guideline. Working towards a healthy weight can also benefit fertility in both men and women.

    Pharmaceuticals

Did you know that some types of painkillers can have a temporary effect on ovulation, and affect the chances of getting pregnant? These include ibuprofen, diclofenac and naproxen, and may be good to avoid if you are or are trying to get pregnant. Ask your midwife or ask the staff at the pharmacy if you are unsure, and read the package leaflet.

    Avoid alcohol, tobacco and nicotine

Avoid alcohol and tobacco to optimize the chances of getting pregnant and for a safe pregnancy. High alcohol intake can affect both ovulation in women and sperm quality in men. Tobacco can also make it more difficult to get pregnant, including cigarettes, snuff, white snuff, water pipes and e-cigarettes.

If you want help to quit tobacco, there is good help available, including here.
